39-WEEKS DISSEMINATION & BIRTH REGISTRY ACCURACY
PROJECT
Following the success of the initial 39-week early elective delivery project, OPQC received continued funding to spread this project to the remaining ~80 hospitals in Ohio that offer maternity services. Fifteen additional hospitals joined OPQC in 2012 as participants in a new "39-Weeks Pilot Project" which focused on decreasing non-medically indicated births prior to 39 weeks using the birth certificate as the project data source. OPQC faculty partnered with key leaders from the Ohio Department of Health, Office of Vital Statistics to improve the accuracy of birth certificate data within the QI framework.
The Integrated Perinatal Health Information System (IPHIS) is Ohio’s birth registry. Formerly known as the “birth certificate,” IPHIS is the most extensive perinatal data base in Ohio. Researchers and Quality Improvement specialists, who study factors which affect the health of pregnant women and their newborns, use IPHIS data to track important indicators such as preterm birth, low birth weight, complications of pregnancy, newborn outcomes and breastfeeding upon discharge. Information accuracy is essential to make IPHIS information trustworthy enough to be used for these important health care decisions.

IPHIS EDUCATION TRAINING MODULES
Below are five online modules which describe the use of the IPHIS as the essential perinatal data base in Ohio. These modules are approximately 30 minutes each, and are entirely self-study.
Module 1: Why is the birth certificate important to the healthcare of women and newborn infants?
Module 2: What are the variables in the Ohio birth certificate and what do they mean?
Module 3: Where are select birth certificate variables found in the patient's medical record?
Module 4: How can I know if I have accurately entered data in IPHIS?
Module 5: How can I improve the data entry processes at my hospital?
