NEONATAL OPIOID WITHDRAWAL
SYNDROME & MATERNAL OPIOID USE DISORDER
Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS) is a significant and increasing public health issue, with estimates in the United States, one baby is diagnosed with NOWS every 19 minutes, which is close to 80 newborns diagnosed every day.
In an 18-month period in Ohio, more than 550 full-term infants with NOWS were identified in six children’s hospitals and their affiliates, which represent only 14% of Ohio newborn care sites (the tip of the iceberg).
OPQC is committed to improving the care substance exposed infants receive through their NAS Project. Here, you can find resources that will explain NOWS in more detail, shed light on maternal opioid use disorder, and educate parents on the care of their new baby with NOWS.
